Black Capped Sweet-A-Dee for Voice and Harp

For Soprano Voice and Harp
Words & Music by Janet Lanier

This delightful little tune in G Major is about a black capped chickadee that will warm your audience's heart. The harp accompaniment is easier than the solo harp version and there are no lever or pedal changes. The accompaniment also has the two-finger glissando in the right hand and the left hand crossing over the right hand throughout as seen in the opening bars of the sample below.

The soprano part range is from D above middle C to G at the top of the treble staff.

LYRICS:

High up in a tree sits a little chickadee
Joined by his friends in activity.
With his black bib and his cap,
He is quite a dapper chap,
He's my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

Little Chickadee
You're so cute to me,
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

His feathers are so soft and his tummy oh so round
Suddenly he makes lots of raucous sounds.
Why it's me I must protest.
Tell me why you are so stressed?
Oh my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

I want to hold you close to my cheek,
And feel a gentle tap from your beak.
You never want to answer my questions.
Yet you give a little wink, or maybe that's a blink.
Oh my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

Little Chickadee
You're so cute to me,
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.
Little Chickadee
Have no fear of me,
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

Last night I had a dream I was tiny as a bee,
The chickadee flew down and shouted, "Come with me!"
So I climbed onto his tail and high up on his back.
Then he pushed with his wings as he gave a little "Yak!"

Little Chickadee
Now you're big to me,
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.
Flying high so free.
Thank you chickadee!
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee.

He flew me to a branch and nodded to his friends.
They all made noisy sounds including all the wrens.
But I didn't understand so I asked him, "What was that?"
Then he pointed to the ground where I saw a pussy cat!

Little Chickadee
Now I think I see,
You're really not afraid of me.
You're my Black Capped Sweet-a-Dee!
